Buying the Right Patio Furniture

by guestpost on December 5, 2008

A lot people don’t really think twice about the furniture they buy. They just snap up whatever is on sale or on discount and then make it fit in their room or outdoors. However this is not something that you should do. Your furniture whether it is for the living room or patio furniture should be bought with care. With regards to patio furniture, you don’t want to buy just anything and then realize that it you’ve over crowded your patio. You need to measure your patio, and then buy furniture that would be suitable. For example if you have a small patio, you might want to think of buying some delicate and compact furniture. Wrought iron furniture will be especially apt for a smaller patio. If your patio is big, you can think of wood or big wicker chairs. Basically with a bigger patio, you have more choice with patio furniture. The important thing to realize is that you have plenty of options, and you need to explore these so you can get the best for yourself. Consider quality, don’t buy anything just because its cheap, you might end up spending more, for you may notice that it’ll get spoiled soon, and you’ll have to buy furniture yet again. With a reasonable budget, you’ll be surprised at the quality of patio furniture you’ll be able to get.

Outdoor Patio Furniture is not only for Patios

Many of you don’t have the luxury of a large yard, but you still want your summer room, and you can’t wait to shop for some outdoor patio furniture. What can you do make a small porch or balcony appear more spacious?  First of all, plan to use the space for only one purpose. A small area can’t be used for as many activities as a larger one. Decide what your priority is, and plan for that alone. It is especially important when you choose your outdoor patio furniture. The number one rule is the old K.I.S.S., “Keep it Simple, Stupid”. Your furniture should be space efficient, but does not have to be small. Many small items make a space more cluttered than one or two large items. You should have a focal point, maybe a beautiful view or an unusual wooden bench. Create a theme. For example, use the same material for all your outdoor patio furniture. Remember you’re your floor space is limited, so choose your furniture accordingly. Adirondack style pieces take up a lot of room compared to some other designs.  Outdoor patio furniture made of wicker may be a great choice for a small space. Use your imagination and plan well.

Outdoor Patio Furniture for the Small Patio

by guestpost on November 21, 2008

The proliferation these days of patio homes, condos, and town-homes provides unique challenges in choosing outdoor patio furniture. With confined spaces it’s important to choose carefully in order to maximize the utility of the area. Seating for four at a small dining table is likely the maximum you’d choose for a small space, with the dining chairs serving double duty away from the table when you prefer a conversation area. The small area available in such places can be enhance by careful consideration of the configuration of outdoor patio furniture so that you can achieve your entertainment goals without over crowding the space, making everyone feel confined. Accept the limitations you have and adjust your design goals to accommodate those goals. If you typically entertain a large number of people, set up the flow of people so that some of your guests can sit inside without feeling like they are isolated from the people sitting outside. Guests should feel comfortable moving between the interior space and the exterior space. The outdoor patio furniture should be comfortable and inviting, but not necessarily more so than the indoor furniture, so the inside people aren’t left feeling isolated.

Regional Patio Furniture Styles

One of the most popular East-coast styles of patio furniture is the Adirondack chair. Named after its roots in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. The swept-back design almost forces one to accept the inevitability of relaxation. Typically made of wood and painted bright colors, the Adirondack is experiencing acceptance in the rest of the country with the introduction of injection molded plastic replicas. On the West-coast you’ll likely find patio furniture constructed of redwood. Generally straight backed, with wide arms, redwood furniture stands up well against the elements, but are more frequently enhanced by thick padding. In the mid-west, the old staple has been the aluminum chair with a woven web either in traditional armchair or the ubiquitous chaise lounge. Not much on looks, but they are usually comfortable. The most common form of patio furniture, though, is the picnic table. A staple in any part of the country, it can be rough hewn, or highly polished, but it serves a single purpose, to provide an inexpensive seating arrangement the whole family can enjoy without being too concerned about who spills what. Whether it’s wood, plastic or metal, if it’s on the patio it means family fun.
